Skittles first day home

Posted on April 27th, 2015 in Uncategorized by skittlesdad

Hi my name is Skittles, and it’s been a really tough week for me. My sister Snickers and I have been best friends since we were both adopted from the humane society at 8 weeks of age. Everything was great for over 3 years, we did everything together, we were inseparable. Well that all changed a month ago when mom and dad split up. It was awesome at first, living out in the country with all the wild life to amuse us, we were happy as could be. But after a few weeks me and my sister tried to re-establish dominance and started fighting. We got in trouble from dad, and for the first time ever lived apart for two days, as I had to go back to mom’s house. Boy o’ boy did we miss each other, and when I got back home everything was great again.

Two weeks later dad dropped us off at mom’s house for a few days, and that’s when IT happened. Snickers and I got into a bad fight over a bone in the yard and mom, as hard as she tried, was not strong enough to pull us apart. By the time it was over, I was in really bad shape and mom rushed me to the emergency room. Turns out my sister is in charge, lol ( I still have my sense of humor). I had many wounds they had to shave and clean, but was really hurting was my front right leg. It was broken,, and x-rays showed it was shattered in pieces both above and below the elbow. What a bummer! What really sucks is it was so bad, no surgeon felt the could put it back together again. Mom and dad searched everywhere, but in the end  there was only one option left on the table, I was going to have to have my leg amputated. I know it made mom and dad really sad, but they know what an awesome dog I am and can handle anything! (Certainly better than dad, lol)

Believe it or not, getting my leg amputated wasn’t the worst part, it was that I had to stay in a cage at the vets for almost a week before they could schedule my surgery. Don’t get me wrong, they were sooooo nice to me there, but I missed my Parents something fierce. Every time they came to visit me I thought it was time to go home, and was so sad when they left. I was even starting to miss Snickers, lol. The big day finally came yesterday, and I am happy to say Dr, Wilson did an excellent job and everything went smoothly.

Today was believe it or not a happy day for me, I finally get to go home! They take me out of my cage and down the hall, it has to be good. Through the door and BAM I see mom and dad, I couldn’t get there fast enough. I was hugging and kissing, tail wagging a million miles an hour. Oh how much I love them! After a few minutes, I said come on Dad get me the hell out of here! I think they were surprised when I not only walked right out the door, but even jumped up into dads car. You should have seen the look on there faces 😉

After a 2 1/2 hour drive home to dad’s house, I was so happy to finally be home again. Funny, I looked all over and can’t find Snickers anywhere. She must be at mom’s house and dad just said I won’t get to see here for a while. Dad got me some delicious steak to slip me my pills in, drank a lot of water and laid down for a nap. I even went outside to pee and eat some grass, oh I love country living.

It’s been a long week so I am going to get some rest now, but will continue to update with my progress.

Love, Skittles

Thanks Jerry appreciate the kind words. Michelle was super nice to my Dad when he called the hotline last night. It made him feel alot better and realize that I’ll just be that much cooler once I recuperate from my surgery. He is very lucky to find such a supportive community, he will forever be grateful for her compassion and understanding. I will post pictures and updates as soon as I wake up from my well deserved nap 😉
      Thanks again! Love, Skittles

Thank you Paula, my dad really needed her and I am so glad he called, it’s made it so much easier for me when he’s not crying like a little girl, lol. We are both doing real good and look forward to getting more involved in the Tripawds community.
      Thanx, Skittles

SKITTLES!! Oh my goodness! Your post is riveting!! You had quite some owwweees! And had to spend a week at the vets while your sister got to stay home! Girls can just be rotten sometimes!!

Sounds like there jphas been a lot of tension and a lot of upheaval in your loves recently. I’m sure you and your sister have become a little stressed and out of balance.

Skittles, you ans Snickers have to remember that neither one of yoj are in charge…your humans are your pack leaders! You two don’t have wrestle anymore to establish dominance. Your mom and dad have reclaimed that role!

Recovery is no picnic for a week or so…lots of ups and downs sometimes and balancing of pain meds, etc. You just take it easy for now, just potty breaks and plenty of rest. Of course, plenty of steak and ice cream too!

Welcome to the family Skittles! You are clearly a very loved fella’! Can’t wait to see pics!!

    Hugs to all!

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle too!

PS…We think Michelle is great too! And the fact that she has a dog named Snickers too…WOW!

We can’t express how much all the support means to us!
      Xoxo, Skittles
